No Power In LG TV Repaired
The complaint of this LG CRT TV was no power and as usual the first thing to do is to check on the main fuse. Before I could access to the main fuse, I found that the circuit board was full of dust thus I cleared all dust first by using a vacuum cleaner before checking on the main fuse.
The main fuse was checked to be good so I had to turned the circuit board so that I can check on the components from behind the board.
Before started to check on the components I already saw the cause of the no power problem. It was due to dry joint in the on/off power switch- see the photos below:
This had caused an open circuit thus there were no supply current to the whole circuit board. In order to solve this problem, I applied fresh solder onto the joints and rechecked on the circuit line to make sure there are contacts between the points.
After that I powered up the circuit board without using the light bulb trick because I knew that the only cause of the problem was dry joint and no other causes.
The power LED was lighted up.
I turned off the power and put everything back to its position and powered it up again. Look at the display in the photo below:

Good and easy job. I guess those dry joints will be much harder to find now that we use leadfree solder (with silver and other active flux instead).
The flux in lead-free solder is much more active than the old rosin (literally pine sap) flux in the leaded solder like in this old LG CRT TV. Lead solder shines after it is cooled down and the lead free does not (looks like a dry joint). Also the lead-free flux is much more irritating to our eyes and respiratory tract. And unless you use no-clean flux, the flux must be cleaned from the board or it will corrode the metal.
Commendable job. Keep it up. We all follow your idea keenly.
… Very helpful.
