A Filter Capacitor Poorly Welded In A New Power Supply
A street vendor periodically visits my village to sell electric and electronic tools as well as various household equipment. The first time i met him, he told me he was an electrician and decided to change jobs. As he owns a car he travels to Casablanca the industrial capital to buy products and visits many villages to make retail commerce.
He came a few months ago and I bought a power supply.
Back at home, I unpacked and plugged it into the power outlet for testing. To my amazement, the green light on the exit did not come on even though the tool was brand new. I decided to return it to the seller for a replacement.
After a moment of rest, I went to look for him but he had already left. I went back home and after unscrewing the lid, I started a visual scan of the circuit to finish detecting the filter capacitor positive pin clearly poorly soldered.
Once the troubleshooting was completed, I resumed the test and the green light came on indicating a success repair.
I still had to check the output voltage to ensure its matching with the nominal indicated value on the power supply: the measurement 12.09V as displayed on the DMM proves it.
I forgot to say that this new device has cost me only 1 € when its price on online stores is worth 10 times more. How much the troubleshooting is beneficial, whether it’s a hobby or a job, it deserves all our gratitude!

Good job Abdellah. Most defects can often be found by visual inspection and are indeed repairs that are worth fixing.
Hello engineer Albert,
yes it can be said that a visual scan plays the role of a human detector simulating electronic test devices, which greatly facilitates the reactivation of a failed device.
Best wishes
Thank you for another great article!
I’d be grateful if you’d share with me about the test equipment that you use to test power supplies. Do you think an oscilloscope is necessary at some point?
Hello Ghashaan, I am proud of your follow-up and your reaction to my articles. As you can see, I use a VICTOR VC921 digital multimeter,I find it an efficient automatic measurment tool. As its name suggests, an oscilloscope presents the advantage of visualizing any phenomenon with a tendency to oscillate , I see that it is mandatory for advanced tests for which we need to recognize an electrical sine, square, triangle, sawtooth or continuous signal,it helps to measure high frequencies and to display the response of an oscillating circuit such as charge-discharge of a capacitor, electromagnetic sensitivity of a solenoid to current peaks…I guess that regarding the test of a power supply, a DMM seems to be sufficient to accomplish the task, otherwise ,the oscilloscope is required in many cases for example,in researchs on alternative energy inwhich we want the inverter to output a purely sinusoidal electrical signal.
I hope that I have brought you a better answer.
