A Hair Straightener Ended In My Shop After Visiting Another Technician
A lady walked into my shop and gave me a hair straightener for repair. From the look on it I could see that someone was already inside that device.
It was a dead hair straightener and the lady wants it repaired as soon as possible.
She told me that this device was already in someone else workshop and it worked for almost a month then it stopped working. She wanted me to take a look and get it fixed.
I took the screw caps off and then slid the screw and metal plate off and I was able to separate the two parts away so I can see what was wrong.
More screws to come off to expose the power cable and the rest of the parts.
The first thing that I saw was the safety switch. I checked for continuity on that switch and it was in perfect conditions so I moved on to the next step.
I wanted to make sure that the power is being fed to the device.
There I saw two cables actually loose and just sitting there. There was supposed to be a metal plate sitting inside this device to allow the cable to rotate clock wise or counter clock wise so the cable will not twist. This metal plate was missing and it seems like that the other technician took it off because he could not find the right cable for it.
I informed the customer about the situation and told her that I will get a new cable and the metal piece that holds that cable but she did not want to spend too much money on it. So I had to do it her way against my recommendations.
As you can see in the photo, I twisted the two cable together added some solder to the joints and then added a heat shrink to make it safe. As I did that and put everything back together, and to be honest with you, it was not easy folding all these cables together then add the plastic on it.
Finally I managed and closed the device and as you can see, it was working fine. Heat was ok and it was safe. My only concern was the twisting of the cable as the device is being used. I told her to watch that cable and make sure it does not twist as she was working on that device.
Mission accomplished.

Given good advice is always important to prevent dangerous situations. But maybe the customer lady in this case should have gone back to the previous repair shop to ask back the metal plate for this device from that technician, that limits the cable to partly clock wise or counter clock wise rotation. After all she probably had paid a fee there too and they had done a bad job to her hair straightener afterall!
