A German organization manager brought this for repair. This manager is a wise man. He goes around in his own car and looks for devices that were thrown away by people and gets these devices fixed for cheap; he uses them in his organization. That is where I come in as technician to help him out by getting them fixed for cheap.

He brought me a heating radiator that was completely dead. Take a look

I powered the device but as you can see, it was dead.

It was time to open it and see what was wrong.

The front cover came off and I could see inside of this device. 220 volt was reaching fine inside the device. I cleaned all the dust off and made sure all the contacts on the heating control switch are clean. They were dirty but cleaning them did not bring the device back to life.

You can see the dirt on this fan that distributes the hot air all though out the room.

I disconnected all the wiring and tested the heating element but it checked out fine.

I came across this. This is a safety device that is found in all of moving heating devices. It is a like an off/on switch that depends on motion. The weight on the lower side moves as you move the device. When it is in that position it connects both sides of the wires together.

In case someone knocked it over, the weight will no longer be connecting both wires together so the device will go into shut down mode.

The moment I checked the connections with my multimeter when the weight was in vertical position, the switch was faulty. I could cut it off and connect the two wires together and it should work but it will not be safe. So I had to find a new or fix this one.

The Deoxit cleaner once again came to the rescue. I sanded it and cleaned it. Once I add the lubricant and tested it, it was functional again. I installed back on the device and guess what?

A lot of people are throwing stuff like this away every day just because it did not power up. With simple cleaning and common sense, the machine is functional again providing heat to people in a safe way. Mission accomplished.

Interesting safety component such a power off switch. Never read about those before! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

I think they call it dangling switch. I have seen it many times in such heating devices.

Thanks for the tip. I found recently a few of these type of heaters. I open up one already and found the same problem. But here the kill off switch is an micro switch type with a lever.

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Maurice: you are most welcome. there are different kill switches but I like mostly the dangling switch which is much safer.
