An organization that deals with mentally and physically challenged children brought this device for repair. It is a game for kids to step on and make music.

The device comes on but there was no sound coming out of it.

battery corroded

In this situation, either it has a bad speaker or a bad amplifier chip.

musical game repair

Took some screws off and exposed the speaker but when I tested it out, it was fine

My next step is to check if the amp IC was getting any power or the IC chip itself was bad.

musical game fix

The IC part number is 386D.  I found it by the name of LM386 and the VS pin was pin number 6. When I checked the voltage there is was almost 1 volts and that was not right. It is too low to operate such chip.

I disconnected the pin 6 and tested voltage reading there and it was still the same. I traced the chip backwards and tested all the parts there but all checked ok.

I decided to replace the batteries and see maybe they are not giving enough power to operate.

To my surprise look what I found.

how to fix musical game

It was rusty; take a look to the other surprise I found.

bad batteries

I did not bother to check the batteries because the power LED was on. I assumed the power was well but it was not ok. That was a shock to me as well. Once the batteries were replaced and the rusty part cleaned, the toy was alive again.

Sometimes we assume the worst but most of the time; it is just a simple fix.

Mission accomplished.

A few months ago I read a very interesting short article about how to easily clean heavily corroded electric contacts that are completely rusty because of leaking batteries. Like the article said I just used the soap we use daily in our kitchen to clean our dishes and pots with. And I let the board with its contacts completely soak in that soap for a day. And I was able to brush the mostly green corroded contacts completely clean afterwards. The best tip in years that I read about in Electronics magazine Elektor. It is all about Basic chemistry!

I had a kids toy to repair about 10 years ago and I was having similar problems.
eventually I checked the battery contacts that looked fine, but on further inspection I found corrosion that was minute that it created enough resistance to make the toy not work properly.

I just repaired my digital clock that sits outside and stopped working
with a fairly new C cell battery. Parts of the digital would come on
for a split second then go out, different parts of the display.
Cked the battery voltage ok, cked the batt terminals ,ok
sanded the battery terminals, then everything ok.
Oxidation from mooisture in the air creates all kind of problems.
I formerly worked at a car rental business were kept busy all day
putting out airbag warning lights from oxidized air bag sensor connections.
