sony hifi tray not open

This Sony Hi-Fi came in for repair with the complaint of tray can’t be opened even though the front button already been pressed. The display showed open mode but there was no movement from the tray. I opened the cover and head straight to the connector to check on the voltages. All the signals were printed on the circuit board which was easy for me to perform the voltage testing.

The voltages that I intended to check were the 9 volt and 3.3 volt-see the two photos below:

on voltage test on connector

The 9 volt and 3.3 volt DC were checked to be good.

The 9 volt is the supply voltage to the main CD tray motor.

3.3 volt testing

I applied an external 9 volt to the  DC motor and it did not rotate at all and confirmed spoilt.

bad dc motor in hifi

I searched from my compartment and found a used DC motor but working and  fixed it the could open now.

good dc motor

Conclusion- It was a pretty straight forward repair. Assuming if there is no 9 volt DC then I have to trace backward and see where the 9 volt had gone missing. But in this case, it was just a  motor fault. Ok see you again in the next repair article.

Is the tray as filthy as it looks in the pic? That is one dirty-looking tray and can only imagine how dirty the insides are!

Great article, straight to the point. Always like to see used/old equipment repair. Not like here in the USA, they tossed their electronic devices and go to the store to buy a new one. Not knowing that a simple part that probably cost less then $2.00 US Dollar can fix the issue. Like many here, I go around the neighborhood to pick up electronic devices for parts, or fixing it for resale. Few months ago I found a Samsung HDTV outside. I stopped and checked the cosmetic part. The owner came out and said that it quit working and asked permission to take it. Next day I found out that the problem was a capacitor in the power supply section. I fixed the issue and it is sitting in my room. I admire my colleague from other countries how resourceful you all are! Keep them working and bring more article. Good Luck!!!!

I was wondering how to troubleshoot an old stereo console I have, that does not power up at all. I do not know where to begin probing with my multi tester and how to test with power on or off.
