An electrician who works in a humanitarian organization nearby brought me a LED light device for repair. The moment I powered up the device, I could see the fault bright and clear.  The LED lights on that device were flickering.

In this photo you can see LED lights that are off but in fact, the lights were flickering and I could not capture that with my camera. Usually, when it comes to LED light flickering my mind set goes to some bad capacitors that gone either high ESR reading or sometimes they get open therefore causing issues in the device.

The device was dismantled when I got it from the customer. It was an indication that someone worked on it but could not fix it.

The first thing that came to mind is to check the capacitors for bad ESR reading. As you can see, the first one that I checked was 4.7 uf/400 volts and it checked to be open. As I continued to check for capacitors with bad ESR meter, I came across another bad which was also 4.7 uf/400 volts.

4.7uf 400 volt

You can see the value of the capacitor printed on the board itself.

I had only one of the capacitors in my shop and for the second one; I had to use a bigger size one. As you can see, it was working fine.

The only problem is to find another small size capacitor to fit on that board.

Finally, I managed to find the right size capacitor and it completed the repair.

Only two bad capacitors found faulty on that board.

Mission accomplished.

Your meticulous way of troubleshooting is always appalling!

    1. You made me laugh!

      Appalling means disgusting.

I’m sure you meant the word APPEALING, which means desirable!

      Well done Waleed!

Menahem: I hope he did not mean appalling? thanks man

Yes, dear! A stupid typographical error! My apologies! What I meant was appealing!

Parasuraman: what you mean by appalling? I hope it was just a typo error.

Good job, those d@#mn e-caps again! Parasuraman obviously meant to say “appealing”?
(He probably missed one ‘e’ and put one ‘l’ too many in)

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Albert: thank man. I hope his miss spelled that. lol

  3. Mark says:

Well done Waleed – those caps will get you every time :)

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Mark: yes, usually flickering lights most of the time have to do with bad caps. Thank God for ESR meters. have a blessed day

  4. Parasuraman S says:

My apologies! It was a stupid typographical error! I never meant ‘appalling’, that too on a professional high class repair report! What I typed was ‘Appealing’,which got auto corrected in my mobile as opposite due to misspell! What dam… thing to happen!

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Parasuraman: that is ok my friend. I appreciate it
