Play Station With Faulty Start Up Repaired
A friend of mine and his son brought this Playstation to my shop for repair. The main complaint it was not starting up. What I mean by that is when powering the playstation, the light on it should start blinking blue and then it should switch to white for operation. If it does not switch to white, the device cannot be operated.
There were a lot of screws to remove to get to the main board.
Sometime the main chip would be the problem due to the fact that the thermal paste would be dry and the heat would cause it not to work. So that was my first thing to check.
As I was taking it apart I also noticed a lot of dirt in that device and this has to be addressed as well.
By checking online, when power up the playstation, the blue blinking light come on and it tests the internal parts of the device and if there was something wrong, it will not switch to white light and it will eventually shut itself off as a precaution procedures. As I the father explained later on, that his son dropped the playstation on the floor causing the symptom to come up.
As expected, the thermal paste on the main chip was dry and needed cleaning and adding new thermal paste to it.
As I checked further on the net, I was informed of the blue and light issues on Playstation and it was called the blue light of death. This is a fault caused by faulty main chip in the device. There are ways to deal with it either by re balling the main chip or an easy fix for it and that is what I attempted to do. Take a look.
Since the son dropped it on the floor maybe causing the soldering balls on the chip to get loosen a little bit so after I added the new thermal paste and put the metal back on I did this.
This metal clip with two screws will be forcing the metal against the main chip so what I did, I added two rubber washers to the screws adding more pressure to the main chip.
As I was informed later on that this method might last for a week or it could last for years and this method does not apply to all the Playstation models.
Lucky me, I powered the playstation and it started to blink blue then it switched to white. I kept it in my shop for almost a week and it was working fine.
This repair was done almost one month ago so far so good. He also brought other things for repair as well. It was a new learning experience for me and that is why I wanted to share it with you guys.
Mission accomplished.

Blue ring of death sounds like more bga problems for these consoles. Like replacing the X-clamps with the Red Ring of death Xbox problem. Hopefully it is fixed for a very long time when it still works in a year or so.
Albert: yes very similar situation but with different chip part number. so far, it is working fine because he brought the same machine for soft ware update last week. I can call my self lucky for that. have a blessed day
Something very new for me! The device and the methods employed to service it, all new lessons for me! Thanks for sharing.
Parasuraman: it was new for me too that is why I searched the fault and repair online. you are most welcome and have a blessed day
