Recently I decided to buy new speakers for my laptop. They have much better sound and uses USB port to connect to the laptop. The old ones that I have, can be powered on but there was no sound. Today, I decided to get them fixed because a friend of mine was in need of speakers and I was willing to get them fixed and offer them as a gift.

speaker repair

They used to have good sound and I had them for almost five years till they stopped producing sound.

Since there was no sound and I have power, I headed directly to the sound IC and I was almost sure that it was the main problem.

To get inside the speakers, I had to take the speaker face off to get to the screws.

Two screws on the bottom and two screws on top. Once the screws were off, I could see inside the speakers.

As you cans see the speaker board inside; my thoughts were focused on the amp IC on that board. The part number is SJ2822M9 and the datasheet:

sj2822m9

2j2822m datasheet

I did not even bother checking voltages on it, because I was more than sure that the problem lays in that bad chip.

Once it was taken off board and found out the part number, I found exactly like it in my shop.

As you can see, the IC was off and once I made sure that the board was clean, I installed the old replacement on that board.

I put everything back together and I hocked up my speakers to my laptop and as expected, the sound was back and it was good.

I called the guy and he came and got his speakers; he was happy. It is not always about money and income but it is about putting a smile on someones face. Mission Accomplished.

Good job. Ten of those probably equally TDA 2822 dual amplifier ICs only cost $0.99 free shipping on eBay. Which makes it an interesting little chip to use in other audio projects!

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Albert: thanks. yes they are very cheap but it takes a long time to get. here I have it in my shop or buy them from the store near by

  4. Ernie says:

You had the datasheet. Why not spend a few more minutes to show proper troubleshooting methods? Very easy to check voltage, which should always be the first step.

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Ernie: usually it is the first step to do and I know it is very easy to check voltages but in this case I know exactly what the fault was why waste time.

Well said! It’s not always money that matters. It’s the human value and the relationship! Excellent!

I thought that you would have first checked the capacitors for leakage. However, after giving it some thoughts I can certainly understand why the capacitors were ignored. A leaky capacitor and or leaky capacitors would not killed the sound all together. There would still be sound, perhaps raspy, muffled or garbled. Good job. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Waleed says:

      Devon: exactly.

    2. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Devon: you are most welcome. thanks for sharing
