TOP261EN Power IC Burnt In Philips DVD Player
The complaint of this Philips DVD player was no power and the first thing to do after confirmed that it was indeed faulty was to open the cover. Once the cover was removed I could see three circuit boards.
It was the power supply board, Mainboard and the Main Amplifier board. It also has the CD tray and the laser assembly-see the photo below:
Since the complaint was no power the first component to check was the main fuse and it was found to be open circuit. This indicated something had shorted. Upon careful visual inspection, I found the power IC with the part number of TOP261EN was burnt-see the photo below:
I have the same power IC in my compartment and you can click on the TOP 261EN IC Datasheet below for more technical information.
I checked further in the power board to see if there is any more bad component but found none. If you want to learn how to check electronic components you can click HERE for more info.
After that I used the light bulb method to check and make sure no more shorted component. It turned out to be fine.
Since the bulb did not light, so I put in the main fuse and powered the DVD player and it worked beautifully.

Dear Suranga,
Thanks for your useful article. can you explain me How to Modify the old CD player to USB port.
I have exactly the same DVD Player showing no standby LED/cannot power on, only 18months old. Problem started with the unit only staying on for a short while then turning off with no standby LED, now no LED, nothing !
Took out power board, have correct voltage (220v) at center 2 pins of bridge rectifier, not sure what voltage to expect across the big filter capacitors as there are 2, not just the 1 capacitor, like I’ve seen before.
Done a full visual inspection, can’t see any obvious signs of bad cap’s, resistors, diodes, burning etc.
Have very little DC voltage coming out the output plugs, 34v showing only 8v, drops slightly on attaching the meter. 12v, 5v only showing around 1v !
As you have seen this exact board, would you have any points that I could test that might point me in the right direction ?
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
