Universal Power Supply Replacement in DVD Player
The complaint of this Hachi DVD player was no power. Once the cover was removed I could see the power supply, mainboard and the Tray assembly-see the photo below:
I saw the main fuse was good so I powered on the power supply and check the output voltage. However, the output voltages were all measured zero voltage indicated problem in the power supply.
When I flipped the power supply board to look at the power IC I saw there was a burnt mark on the surface of the power IC. This is the reason why there was no power when the ac voltage was applied-see the two photos below:
Since I do not have the original power supply IC and the customer wanted the player back fast, I do not have other choice other than to modify a universal power supply into it. Nowadays, you can get such universal power supply for less than USD6.00.
I just tapped from the new power supply the three output voltages which are the + 12 v, -12 v and + 5 volt and connect it to the mainboard and you are done.
Somehow I rather felt disappointed because the DVD player refused to power up.
I knew this surely the fault of main board already.
Coincidentally I had a spare new mainboard with me and I replaced with the new board and turned the power supply On again. This time I could see that the DVD player was working fine now-see the four photos below:
Conclusion- I do not earn much from this repair work but at least I had solved the problem for my customer. If you intend to venture into DVD player repair you can check out Humphrey’s ebook HERE. Ok see you next time.

Good decision to replace main board.
Did you have an exactly the same spare DVD mainboard at hand? Because Dvd player trays often differ on their flatcable and other connectors what would make it impossible to use just any other main board. Why several defect DVD players I have laying around at home couldn’t be fixed. Maybe you have a link to such a (universal?) dvd board?
Hi again Suranga. You have solved a trouble 100%. Congratulations.
Same question as Albert van Bemmelen. Please answer his question. Thank you
Thanks for the wonderful knowledge of DVD players power supply replacement. I am very very grateful.
Well done! Suranga.
Thanks for new ideas everytime I read your article.
